Social learning in a heterogeneous population: technology diffusion in the Indian Green Revolution
نویسنده
چکیده
Information flows are weaker in a heterogeneous population when the performance of a new technology is sensitive to unobserved individual characteristics, preventing individuals from learning from neighbors’ experiences. This characterization of social learning is tested with wheat and rice data from the Indian Green Revolution. The rice-growing regions display greater heterogeneity in growing conditions and the new rice varieties were also sensitive to unobserved farm characteristics. Wheat growers respond strongly to neighbors’ experiences, as expected, while rice growers do not. Rice growers also appear to experiment more on their own land to compensate for their lack of social information. D 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. JEL classification: D80; O30

Generation of Love Wave in a Media with Temperature Dependent Properties Over a Heterogeneous Substratum
The present paper deals with the generation of Love waves in a layer of finite thickness over an initially stressed heterogeneous semi-infinite media. The rigidity and density of the layer are functions of temperature, i.e. they are temperature dependent. The lower substratum is an initially stressed medium and its rigidity and density vary linearly with the depth. The frequency relation of Lo...
متن کاملLove Wave Propagation in a Fiber-reinforced Layer with Corrugated Boundaries Overlying Heterogeneous Half-space
Love-type wave generation in a fiber-reinforced medium placed over an inhomogeneous orthotropic half-space is analysed. The upper and lower boundary surfaces of the fiber reinforced medium are periodically corrugated. Inhomogeneity of half-space is caused by variable density and variable shear modules. Displacement components for layer and half-space are derived by applying separable variable t...
متن کاملTransference of SH-Waves in Fluid Saturated Porous Medium Sandwiched Between Heterogeneous Half-Spaces
A mathematical model is considered to investigate the behavior of horizontally polarized shear waves (SH-waves) in fluid saturated porous medium sandwiched between heterogeneous half-spaces. Heterogeneity in the upper half-space is due to linear variation of elastic parameters, whereas quadratic variation has been considered for lower half-space. The method of separation of variables and Whitta...
متن کاملSocial Learning, Neighborhood Effects, and Investment in Human Capital: Evidence from Green-Revolution India
This paper empirically identifies social learning and neighborhood effects in schooling investments in a new technology regime. The estimates of learning-investment rule from farm household panel data at the onset of the Green Revolution in India, show that (1) agents learn about schooling returns from income realizations of their neighbors and (2) schooling distribution of the parents’ generat...
متن کاملMethod of Green’s Function for Characterization of SH Waves in Porous-Piezo Composite Structure with a Point Source
An approach of Green’s function is adopted to solve the inhomogeneous linear differential equations representing wave equations in piezo-composite materials. In particular, transference of horizontally polarised shear (SH) waves is considered in bedded structure comprising of porous-piezo electric layer lying over a heterogeneous half-space. Propagation of SH-waves is considered to be influence...
